2017 Generation 5 Hibermate is about to arrive...

I know it's been ages since I last posted an update. It was a very busy end to 2016 and an intense start to 2017 behind the scenes here at Hibermate HQ.

Frankly, the 2016 Gen 4 Hibermate I released late last year wasn't well received by customers at all.

Look, some customers thought it was a great improvement but a good proportion were a bit 'iffy' about the new direction using a wide band with single slot ear cups.

Our return-rates leaped and our reviews suffered a bit on Amazon and Facebook.

We've taken a bath on revenue and reputation!

The wide single band that I thought would be a great step forward, turned out to be a step in the wrong direction.

All drama aside...

The last 3 months I've been working with the team to bring back the Generation 3 model with 2 straps - but with minor improvements at every level to create Gen 5.

"...sometimes you feel like you're taking 2 steps backwards for every 1 step forward..."

Anyway, I'm really happy with the 2017 model:

  1. The straps are awesome
  2. The adjustability is super easy
  3. The mask is even more comfortable
  4. The ear cushions are softer
  5. The ear cups are smoother, silkier and reduce more sound

Every aspect of a design that was great in the Gen 3 has been improved to make this edition, the 2017 Generation 5. the best Hibermate ever (I hope!)

Lesson learned in the last 12 months?

Don't mess with a successful formula.

----------------------

Here are some shots of the production sample I have on my desk...

New 2017 Generation 5 Hibermate Sleep Mask

Above: all new mask and embossed silicone ear cups... The silicone is especially coated and smooth meaning it doesn't stick to the pillow and doesn't attract dust and lint. Much easier to keep clean and looking fabulous! They're also more effective at reducing sounds than the previous 2016 model EVA ear cups, and they're softer!

Above: To help with adjustability, we've used 'e-hooks' which clip on and off the mask and allow for much easier adjustment and assembly. The straps are also much softer as well as being tons more durable.

Above: a close-up of the new 'e-hook' clasp...

Above: another close-up showing how easy it is to adjust. The mask will fit all large head-sizes no problem. Not suitable for small kids or small head sizes though sorry!

Above: the ear cushions are also more padded, 3mm 'higher' and the opening (or center hole) is bigger to accommodate more ear sizes.

Above: Hope you like it as much as we do!

Update 22nd May 2017 - they're now in stock and ready for sale - GO!

When anyone buys the new 2017 model, would love to hear a review. The 2016 version I have is ok, but frankly, difficult to sleep in. Neither of the two ‘ear pads’ that came with the set I have are all that comfortable when I lay on my side. No matter how I adjust my head, the big ‘lump’ is just too uncomfortable to sleep in. (The eye mask is fine…but don’t need it as much…) I"m keeping the set, BTW, because it’s better than nothing. But before I purchase the new version, would love to hear if anyone thinks it is more comfortable. Thanks.

Once I received a replacement 2016 mask, with a slightly longer, thinner strap, I have used it regularly. While not the most comfortable, the ear cups significantly reduce noise. Given your description of the 2017 model, I am immediately ordering one for myself, as well as an original mask which my son likes so much.

I’m still a deep fan of the original, and I buy one every so once in a while as a replacement or gift. :)

Hey guys, this is Chris… Thanks for all the comments and support! Just a day or two to go and we’ll have the new model for sale.

Yes, I want to add that 2016 is my favorite mask so far.

Hey, don’t be discouraged. Honestly, I think the design of 2016 looks rather good. Perhaps you should design it in a way that the parts can be easily swapped out (if it’s not already) so people can build their preferred versions. This way, you get to satisfy the most number of customers at a low cost :)

I love this product – mask/ earmuff…. excellent… need to order more… when will you have the 2017 available? notify me…

When will it be available? I’m not crazy about the one I have (but did not write a review :-) because of the hardness/bulkiness of the outer earmuffs, and the eye mask constricts my nostrils, and the velcro catches my hair. Despite these issues I still use it because the full-on sound of hubby snoring is worse. Would love to give the latest model a try! Will the earmuff outer shells be softer / less bulky?

I actually liked the general idea of the 2016 model. My only problems with it is that it’s too small for me. I have a big head and big ears, therefore it’s not comfortable on my eyes, nor ears. If both were bigger, I’d have a winning set. I’ll still try the 2017 model, though. I have a feeling it’ll suffer the same fate as models before the 2016 model, whereas the straps will wear out in 6 months. I haven’t had that problem yet with my 2016 model.

The e-hooks look workable. We like the head fit with the two strap system. Even with the more difficult adjustment on Gen 3 it was once and done – we did not have to fiddle with it once it was initially adjusted.

Having been a customer since the first one, I’ve always been a fan, until you went to the two strap system, even the first ones had a single Velcro fastening. It was most welcome when you went back to it with the last gen. now your going backwards :( is there anyway of offering the new generation one with a single elastic strap as well? That way people can choose which one they prefer.

I think I will buy new one anyway but I afraid of return of straps. It was so difficult to adjust them. Hope you solve that issue.
